Brand New to Jiu Jitsu? You’re Exactly Where You Belong.

Van Isle BJJ runs more dedicated beginner Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes than any other academy in Victoria. Our program is built from the mat up for people with zero experience and zero athletic background — just real Jiu Jitsu, taught with patience, in a room that genuinely wants you there.

The first class is always free. No commitment, no contract, no awkward sales pitch. We’ll lend you a clean uniform, pair you with a friendly training partner, and walk you through every step from the moment you arrive.

Two Beginner Paths — Pick One or Train Both

Our beginner program is split into two complementary classes. Most students start with one, then quickly add the other as they fall in love with the sport.

Fundamentals Gi — The Foundation

Our classic Gi (kimono) beginner program is the deepest, most well-rounded introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Victoria. We work through safe takedowns, guard positions, escapes, basic submissions, and the etiquette of training — with absolutely no pressure to spar until you’re ready.

This is the program that builds the foundation everything else is built on. If you want to train BJJ seriously over the long term, this is where you start.

Beginners No-Gi & Self-Defense

Same welcoming room, no kimono required. This class focuses on practical, no-gi self-defense rooted in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo — standing situations, takedowns, ground control, and how to handle a confrontation that doesn’t start politely.

Lighter on technical depth than Fundamentals Gi, but heavier on real-world application. A great companion class — or a perfect standalone first step if street-realistic self-defense is your main goal.

What Your First Beginner Class Looks Like

  1. Arrive 20–25 minutes early. Time to greet you, sign a quick waiver, give you a tour, and get you in a clean Gi.
  2. Meet your instructor and a training partner. A friendly student will stay with you the whole class so you’re never on your own.
  3. Warm-up & technique. A light warm-up (or straight into technique), then drilling the move of the day with your cooperative partner.
  4. Cooperative positional sparring. Class ends with a beginner-friendly positional game limited to what you just learned — designed to help you learn, not throw you in the deep end.
  5. Walk out smiling. Most first-timers leave with a huge grin and a new appreciation for what BJJ actually is.
